Coalition forces kill eight Afghan cops by mistake
    Irish Sun

    (IANS)

Kabul, Jan 24 (Xinhua) The US-led Coalition forces killed some eight policemen accidentally during an early Thursday operation in the central Afghan province of Ghazni, a local official said.

The press office of coalition forces gave no information while reached by Xinhua, saying a related press release will be issued soon.

Alishah Ahmadzai, the Ghazni provincial police chief, told Xinhua that an investigation was underway.

There was no immediate comment from the interior ministry.

There have been incidents when foreign troops during anti-militant operations in Afghanistan have killed civilians accidentally.

A 50,000-strong force, separately under the command of NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and the US-led Coalition forces, are deployed in war-torn Afghanistan, assisting the Afghan government's anti-militant and reconstruction efforts.

Rising militancy-related violence killed over 6,000 people in the country last year and analysts and NATO commanders say they do not expect a let up in guerrilla attacks by Taliban militants this year.
