The economic recession in the United States has taken away the dream of owning a home for many Americans.

With millions of Americans forced to pay the mortgage on their houses, they have had to leave to join the rental market, which is also proving difficult financially.

The number of Americans who own their homes is steadily dropping.

While the homeownership rate in the United States used to be somewhere close to 70 percent, it is now said to be down by several million households.

Rental agents, in promoting reasons for renting, are now telling ex-homeowners that renting has some advantages over home ownership where a renter can leave without having to find a buyer for the house and it is less expensive than owning a home, with no property tax, maintenance or upkeep.
