    Nine U.S. troops die in separate incidents in Iraq

    Details have emerged over the past 48 hours of the deaths of six U.S. soldiers and three Marines in Iraq.

    A car bomb, detonated near a Task Force Baghdad convoy Tuesday killing one U.S. soldier and wounding two others in the Rusafa district of central Baghdad, U.S. officials said.

    The car bomb exploded next to the convoy as it was stopped at a crowded intersection waiting for traffic to clear. Officials added that seven Iraqi civilians were also killed in the attack, and up to 90 injured. The bomber also died in the blast.

    An Iraqi army battalion and local firefighters and emergency medical technicians responded to secure the area and evacuate casualties.

    Elsewhere, a U.S. Marine assigned to 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), was killed in action Monday by small-arms fire during combat operations in Ramadi. No further details were available.

    Pfc. Seferino J. Reyna, 20, of Phoenix, Ariz., died on Sunday when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle. Reyna was assigned to the 70th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Fort Riley, Kan.

    Lance Cpl. Chase J. Comley, 21, of Lexington, Ky., was killed Saturday as a result of an explosion from a suicide, vehicle-borne, improvised explosive device near Al Amiriyah, Iraq. He was assigned to the 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

    Two Task Force Liberty soldiers were killed and three wounded when an improvised explosive device detonated near a vehicle patrol near Balad, Iraq, at about 6:00 p.m. Saturday, officials said. The soldiers were evacuated to a coalition forces medical facility, where two of them died. Both soldiers were assigned to the Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 111th. They were Sgt. Brahim J. Jeffcoat, 25, of Philadelphia, Pa., and Spc. Kurt E. Krout, 43, of Spinnerstown, Pa.

    Gunnery Sgt. Terry W. Ball Jr., 36, of East Peoria, Ill., also died Saturday from wounds received as a result of an explosion while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Al Karmah, Iraq, on June 12. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

    Meantime two soldiers were killed Friday in Rubiah, Iraq, when a civilian fuel truck collided with their HMMWV while performing a convoy mission.

    The soldiers were Sgt. 1st Class Robert V. Derenda, 42, of Ledbetter, Ky. and Sgt. 1st Class Brett E. Walden, 40, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

    Derenda was assigned to the U.S. Army Reserve's 1st Brigade, 98th Division, Rochester, N.Y., Walden was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Campbell, Ky.

    In other developments, ten Iraqi police officers were killed Tuesday including 5 who were attacked while asleep in their car. Lt. Col. Ahmed Aboud told The Associated Press the men had spent the night on patrol and were waiting for replacements.

    AP also reported late Tuesday that gunmen had killed an Iraqi Cabinet employee, Abbas Ibrahim Mohammed, in Baghdad. In addition, three civilians were killed in a mortar attack, police said.
